The university of Agriculture Makurdi (UAM) was established in the year 1988, following the recommendations of a 1987 federal government White Paper on higher education curriculum and development in Nigeria. President Muhammed Buhari on the 14th of July 2019 approved a bill renaming it to the Joseph Sarwuan Tarka university.
The university is of the three universities of agriculture in Nigeria, the other being in Abeokuta (Ogun State) and Umudike (Abia State).
University of Agriculture Makurdi has also been officially accredited by the national Universities Commission (NUC) Nigeria.
